Right on the beach
The Akquaaa beach bar sits on the sand of Calafell beach, right in front of the restaurant on the seafront promenade. It serves the same kitchen in tapas format —small plates, rice dishes, cocktails— with your feet practically in the water. Open in season, with private parking for customers.
There are beach bars that sit on the promenade and beach bars that sit on the beach. The Akquaaa one is on the beach: you step down from the promenade, cross a few metres of sand and you are sitting down. You hear the sea, you do not just look at it.
This is the place for a mid-morning vermouth, a cold beer after a swim and a long afternoon of picking at things, when the sun starts to drop and there is no hurry to get up. You can come in swimwear and flip-flops: that is what it is for.
And if the afternoon stretches out and you fancy something more formal, the restaurant is thirty paces away.
Get to know the restaurantThe kitchen is the restaurant's own. The format changes, not the produce. Beach bar service carries a 10 % supplement on the menu prices.
The gilda, the patatas bravas with our sauce, the Padrón peppers, the Russian salad with smoked eel, the ham and porcini croquettes, the Andalusian-style squid, the fried small fish, the steamed mussels with a hint of charcoal and the grilled tellines. Nearly all of it in half portions.
The eight rice dishes on the menu are served at the beach bar too, as are the coastal fish and the grilled meats. A seafood rice with your feet in the sand is probably the best plan this place has to offer.
A cocktail list, draught beer, vermouth, wines by the glass and soft drinks. For the long afternoon.
The terrace season starts on the Saturday before Easter and runs until 31 October. As Easter moves each year, the exact opening date moves with it.
Outside that period the restaurant and the indoor dining room stay open.
